Position Purpose

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Sanitation department and the supervision of a team of people. 

Key Accountabilities

The Sanitation Supervisor must ensure operation meets and exceeds all GMP and cleaning criteria as determined by government bodies, customer requirements and internal standards.


  • Lead sanitation employees in a multi shift 24 hour bakery production operation
  • Responsible to be highly engaged in Safety culture through active participation in huddles, meetings, audits, and investigations. Actively look for ways to improve safe processes and behaviors aimed at accident prevention
  • Monitor and enforce GMP compliance by all operators
  • Ensure compliance of all employees to weekly / monthly training schedule
  • Create SSOP’s for new equipment
  • Participate in Internal and External Audits
  • Manages employee performance, discipline, and development. Ensures compliance to company policies and procedures
  • Ensure facility meets all municipal and provincial waste water regulations
  • Ensure a safe work environment
  • Ensure the sanitation is trained to handle any potentially hazardous cleaning agents
  • Adherence to the master cleaning schedule
  • Training employees to work based on GMP criteria
  • Dealing with outside contract services
  • Motivating all employees to work cleanly and safely
  • Gaining co-operation from the rest of manufacturing team
  • Providing leadership and performance development to employees
  • Flexibility around shift work is required with availability for overtime hours
  • Adhere to all applicable job procedures as outlined in SOP manual
  • Adhere to GMPs and Health and Safety rules as outlined in employee handbook
    • Keep work area clean and clear of hazards
    • Report any unsafe conditions, incidents or injuries to supervisor immediately
    • Use all prescribed personal protective equipment
  • Ensure GMP’s and safe food handling practices are being followed
    • All tools to be cleaned and maintained in good repair. Report any broken, damaged, or missing tools to your supervisor. Do not discard any damaged or broken tools.
    • Follow all GMPs including maintaining personal hygiene, hand washing/sanitizing hands, clean up spills (i.e., ingredients, water, debris and wood)
    • Report any foreign material findings to your supervisor
    • Report all ceiling leaks to your supervisor
    • As part of food security, report any unusual people or behavior to your supervisor
  • Perform all other duties assigned


Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • A good knowledge of GMP, HACCP and Safety policies
  • Must to be focused, alert, aware, and able to respond quickly
  • Must to be organized and goal oriented
  • Problem solver
  • Ability to direct people
  • Must be dependable
  • Physical requirements include standing, bending, walking, heavy lifting, climbing
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility around shift work is required with availability for overtime hours as needed
  • Proper understanding of WHMIS requirements
  • Knowledge of site’s Fire Evacuation procedure
  • Meet audit, customer, and regulatory requirements for cleaning
  • Must have excellent attendance and work habits


Education, Technical Qualifications, Experience and Competencies Proficiency Level


  • Diploma in food science or related discipline
  • 3-5 years supervisor experience in a food manufacturing environment



  • 3-5 years supervising a sanitation department in a food manufacturing environment

  • Aspire Bakeries is a 24 hour/ 7 day manufacturing operation
  • The temperature of the environment within the production area can range from 58 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the department  
  • The production areas are often loud, exceeding 85 decibels, due to the machinery that is running; earplugs are required to be worn while in the bakery at all times
  • Depending on position, some employees may be exposed to dust; dust masks and respirators are available if required
