Position Purpose

The Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) Supervisor has the primary responsibility for protecting the food by supervising FSQA Technicians to effectively implement food safety and quality procedures and meeting all regulatory, customer, and Aspire Bakeries requirements.

 

Key Accountabilities

The QA Supervisor is accountable for implementing and monitoring food safety and quality assurance procedures, critical to quality attributes, preventive controls, and ensuring operations is meeting regulatory, customer and internal compliance. The FSQA Supervisor reports to the FSQA Manager and provides leadership directly to their team (exempt and/or non-exempt).

 

Accountabilities (Ability to work different shifts and weekends)

  • Accountable for meeting all applicable food regulations; international, national, state, and local. Examples include Food and Drug, local health department inspections, weights and measure inspections, and Preventive Controls.
  • Accountable for complying with the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards in which the bakery location participates in (i.e. BRC, SQF).
  • Accountable for documentation control, and maintenance of the Quality Management System (QMS) including procedures, records, good manufacturing practices (GMPs), and Food Safety Plan.
  • Works with the operations team to maintain the safety, legality and regulatory requirements of each food and the processes used in their bakery location.
  • Works with other support departments to improve bakery performance (e.g. maintenance, sanitation, warehouse, operations).
  • Understands the Critical to Quality Control Points (CTQCP) of the products manufactured, to drive operational performance and effectively to deliver right the first time quality and mission zero based on finished product specifications.
  • Accountable for understanding, and implementing customer requirements. Supports the bakery team to reduce customer/consumer complaints for foods manufactured on site using root cause analysis, corrective actions and preventive measures.
  • Responsible for the day to day management of the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Technicians, including training and development of the team and clear identification of objectives to meet the bakery needs.
  • Collaborating with the FSQA Manager on establishing a talent training and skills matrix with clear planning and development for the FSQA technicians.
  • Strict adherence to the Integrated Management System (AIMS) Programs.
  • Reports food safety and quality issues, corrective actions, and preventive measures to the FSQA Manager.
  • Authorized to hold product based on food safety or quality nonconformities. Places food on both physical and SAP hold, and collaborates with the FSQA Manager on disposition and decisions to release product for hold.
  • Participates in daily food sensory scoring evaluations to identify possible defects and provides direction to the operations team for continuous improvement.
  • Participates in physical bakery inspections on a weekly basis and reports are generated on each area (pest control, operational methods, maintenance for food safety, sanitation, personnel practices, etc.) and records nonconformities in the management review workbook.
  • Trained as backup for FSQA Manager as technical representative for regulatory, customer and third-party audits.
  • Accountable for assuring materials are received from approved suppliers and conducts raw material supplier performance monitoring based on specifications.
  • Participate in the review, verification and update of HARPc Food Safety Plans,
  • procedures, and documents to protect product safety and quality.
  • Participate in routine facility program, and corporate audits to ensure site is in compliance.
  • Able to quickly and thoroughly investigate a product/process failure, determine the root cause and take prompt corrective actions while minimizing product exposure and production down time (e.g. foreign material investigations).
  • Able to identify opportunities to enhance technology and innovation that will enhance department effectiveness.
  • Manage relationships with intra- and inter- departmental colleagues and suppliers to ensure achievement of departmental and company-wide targets.
  • Responsible for other supervisory activities including, but not limited to, labor budget management, performance evaluation, hiring, discipline, coaching, training and development and termination recommendation.
  • Trained in the Environmental Monitoring Program and swabbing techniques. Actively leads and participates in the food safety culture of the bakery, with clear understanding of SIFIRI (See It, Fix It, and Report It program. Includes regular communication, education, events and employee recognition programs.
  • Accountable for upholding the values of integrity, ownership, customer focus, creativity, and care while bringing these values into their daily work.
  • Exemplifies a safe and healthy work environment and to conduct activities in a safe and health manner, reporting unsafe conditions to their direct report and bakery director.
  • Other duties may be assigned and FSQA Manager is expected to effectively manage and execute changes.

 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or sufficient experience in the food industry preferred.
  • Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) training, BRC or SQF, or Basic understanding of environmental monitoring program(s) desirable.
  • 3 years food industry manufacturing or quality experience including supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years comprehensive food processing, food safety and quality experience with an extensive background in manufacturing food industry, HARPc, USDA, or FDA, preferred.
  • Previous experience with GFSI, BRC, SQF and/or USDA audits desirable.
  • Effective work ethic and efficient communications skills.
  • Training in HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) preferred.
  • Trained as a PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual) preferred Good writing, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  • Detail oriented, and possess strong computer skills
  • Good writing, mathematics, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in reporting to include spreadsheets, statistical programs, and SAP applications.
